Covid-19 updates: November 2020
- As a result of the national restrictions from the government starting on Thursday 5th November, That Speech Lady will continue to provide online sessions to children, young people and their families.
- A limited number of face to face visits have been offered for high priority cases, however this number will be further reduced.
- I really appreciate your patience and support during these times. My thoughts are with everybody who has been affected. If there is anything That Speech Lady can do to further support you, please let me know by emailing me: lauren@thatspeechlady.co.uk

February 2020
- Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) awareness day was Friday 16th October. This year's theme was #DLDSeeMe - it was time for people with DLD to be seen and have their voices heard. I took part by creating a TikTok video for the awareness day and sharing information and facts about DLD.
- October was THE month for awareness raising, with International stammering awareness day taking place on Thursday 22nd October. Lots of information and posts can be found on my Facebook and Twitter pages. You can also search for #ISAD2020. Stamma hosted 'The Big Event' which can be viewed online here: https://stamma.org/news-features/big-event-watch-it-back
- I attended the West Midlands Clinical Excellent Network for working with people who stammer. We had a refresher on the Swindon Dysfluency Packs which is a programme for supporting groups of children and young people who stammer.
- I am continuing to offer online sessions for most of the children and families I work with. I have offered some face to face visits for children who have been unable to access online sessions and/or who have a high clinical need/priority.
- I'm not quite sure where the Summer has gone! These last few months have flown by and I still haven't fully completed my to-do list.
- I hope to launch my newsletter in September/October time. I'm looking forward to sharing my top tips and free resources!
- I am continuing to offer online sessions during Covid-19. I have a very limited number of face to face sessions for those who cannot access sessions online. I am starting back in one of my regular schools where I am there for a full day with protective measures for Covid-19 in place. I hope to increase my face to face visits to other places in the future.
- I attended an online two course about Transactional Analysis therapy which was really interesting. It delved into our three ego states: parent, child, and adult. I hope to create a social media post in the future with more information about what I have learnt.
- I have been given an exciting opportunity to be part of a new group supervision session with Sam Simpson.
- I have attended several group meetings with local therapists where we have been discussing Covid-19, government guidelines, professional guidelines and everything else in between!
- I attended the virtual SEALS stammering CEN (clinical excellence network).
- I attended a webinar by Dr Karla McGregor titled: How we are failing children with Developmental Language Disorder.
- I am in the process of using a new electronic system for managing my clinical casenotes, invoices and files. It's called WriteUpp and I hope it will streamline some of my administration processes so I can focus more on my work with children and young people.
May-June 2020
- My thoughts are with those who are having a difficult time in the current pandemic. I feel extremely fortunate and grateful I am able to continue working and supporting children.
- Teletherapy has kept me extremely busy. I have been working hard to make sure every session is fun, creative and interactive.
- I am not offering face to face visits at the moment. I am regularly reviewing this in line with government advice and recommendations.
- I am regularly meeting with other therapists to discuss how things might look in the future and how we can make places of work safe for everyone. It's important we get this right and I would like to thank everyone for their patience.
- On a separate note, I am excited to announce the release of two video clips on stammering and I have revamped my website to include pages on stammering and teletherapy.
April 2020
- Teletherapy sessions have already started and they have been a great success! It's been lovely to connect with children online and check in with how they are feeling. I feel so grateful to technology for allowing us to connect in this way.
- I have published a document on how teletherapy works with a checklist for parents and therapists to use.
- I completed a 5k run for NHS Heroes. The NHS are an incredible service I feel very grateful for.
March 2020
- I feel the coronavirus (covid-19) has taken us all by surprise. People have been affected in various ways in their work and personal lives. I hope everyone who is reading this is safe and well.
- I have been supporting my local community and reaching out to those who need help whilst ensuring my family are safe and well too.
- I am no longer working in homes, nurseries or schools due to the government advice and 'lock down' measures.
- I will be offering online sessions (teletherapy) in the future. Whilst I feel confident working with technology, this is a huge task to set up. Many hours have been spent online watching webinars, accessing supervision and having regular meetings with other therapists to discuss how we can ensure our sessions are safe, secure, high quality and effective. I'm really positive about the use of teletherapy, I just need a bit more planning time!
February 2020
- It's been a busy month for me. I have taken on more work and new opportunities whilst continuing to support the wonderful children and families I already know. I've had some up's and down's in my new house but I'm feeling much more settled now.
- I attended a South East London Clinical Excellence day for working with children who stammer. The topic was on 'resilience' and I wrote a piece about it on my Facebook and Instagram page: https://www.facebook.com/ThatSpeechLadyUK/photos/a.653126714867775/1435129586667480/?type=3&theater
- I had hoped to publish my first newsletter but it is currently on hold until I have some free time. Watch this space!

I had the privilege of working with Gareth Gates in his very first Stammer School in Bradford, Manchester. It was a 2 day weekend working with children who stammer and their families. The aim was to give them a safe space to find out more about stammering, meet others who stammer and most importantly, have fun! It was an incredible weekend and it was amazing to see the children grow in confidence.
A TV crew from ITV filmed us over the weekend and there was a clip of Stammer School on ITV: This Morning: https://www.itv.com/thismorning/hot-topics/gareth-gates-opens-up-the-door-to-his-stammer-school
